Austin City Council appoints Katrina Daniel to the Healthcare District Board

Katrina M. Daniel, RN, joins the Travis County Healthcare District Board of Managers as its newest
member after being sworn in on Thursday, Aug. 13. Daniel was appointed by the Austin City Council to
fill the sole unexpired vacancy on the board, recently vacated by original board member Rose
Lancaster. Daniel will fulfill Lancaster’s unexpired term, which ends Dec. 31, 2010.

Daniel is Associate Commissioner of Insurance for the Texas Department of Insurance, Life, Health and
Licensing Program. She began her career in health care as a registered nurse in Houston at Ben Taub
General Hospital, one of the nation’s largest and busiest. While completing her Master of Public Health
Degree at the University of Texas, School of Public Health, Daniel came to Austin to work as a
legislative aide for State Representative Garnet F. Coleman, as well as working part time as an
emergency room nurse at University Medical Center Brackenridge (then Brackenridge Hospital) from
1997 until 2002. In Subsequent years she attained a significant deal of public health care experience in
a variety of legislative, planning and public policy development positions with organizations such as the
Texas Department of Health, the Sunset Advisory Commission and the Texas Department of Family and
Protective Services.

Daniel also has a history of volunteer and community service with organizations such as the American
Red Cross, the Austin Neighborhoods Council, the Highland Neighborhood Association and the
Residential Design and Compatibility Commission.

The Travis County Healthcare District is governed by a nine-member volunteer Board of Managers.
Four of the members are appointed by the Austin City Council and four are appointed by the Travis
County Commissioners Court. Both governmental bodies jointly appoint the ninth member. The initial
terms of the Managers were staggered so that, as near as possible, one-fourth of the members’ terms
expire each year. Reappointments and new appointments to the Board serve four-year terms.
