Our Name

Central Health is a dba (“doing business as”) and not our legal name. Our legal name is Travis County Healthcare District, which will be retained for contracts or other legal documents, followed by dba Central Health.

Why a different name?

Since our formation in 2004, as the Healthcare District continued to further define and expand its role in the community, it became increasingly clear that the name of the organization was hindering our objective for greater transparency. Most commonly, the name was confused with the governmental entity of Travis County. This confusion manifested itself daily in matters ranging from billing issues to citizen confusion about which entity was responsible for access to healthcare services. The first two words in our name became a barrier to understand who we are and what we do.

We serve the public as the local entity who is central to providing access to health care.

Central Health was selected as the best descriptor of what we do. Those reasons include:
