Construction Underway at Del Valle, Hornsby Bend Sites

September 22, 2022

New Health & Wellness Facilities Will Serve Eastern Travis County

(Austin) – Construction has begun on Central Health’s new Health & Wellness Centers that will serve patients in Eastern Travis County beginning next year.

After completing the permitting process, construction began this week on the new health and wellness centers in Hornsby Bend, 3700 Gilbert Road (across from Dailey Middle School) and in late August at Del Valle, 7050 Elroy Road (adjacent to Popham Elementary School). Substantial completion of the Hornsby Bend and the Del Valle sites is expected to be reached by the end of next summer. Both facilities, which broke ground last spring, are expected to open to patients by fall 2023.

“It’s an exciting time for our organization, because these two facilities are going to serve a part of Travis County that has been lacking in close-by healthcare access” said Mike Geeslin, President & CEO of Central Health. “Patients will have more convenient access to physical, mental, and dental health providers.”

In the Central Health 2020 Demographic Report, Del Valle and Hornsby Bend were identified as two critically underserved areas in Eastern Travis County.

According to the report, 27.8 percent of the Del Valle households are below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). Diabetes and hypertension are the two highest chronic conditions in the area and their rates exceed the rest of Travis County. The facility will offer primary, dental, and mental health care as well as a retail pharmacy.

The Hornsby Bend Health & Wellness Center will offer primary care, integrated behavioral health and oral health assessment, select specialty care via tele-health and an accessible community gathering space. About 21.4% of residents in the region are below 200% FPL, and have a higher rate of asthma, COPD, diabetes, heart failure, hypertension, and renal failure.

“As we identified in our Healthcare Equity Plan and through an extensive community engagement process, these are two areas that have been historically underserved when it comes to health and wellness,” said Dr. Charles Bell, chairperson of the Central Health Board of Managers. “Opening these two health centers will go a long way toward addressing these issues, increasing health equity in the region, and bringing a better standard of care to our patient population.”
