Health Insurers Seek Hefty Rate Boosts

Major insurers in New Mexico, Tennessee, and Maryland, among others, are proposing rate boosts ranging from 25 to 50 percent for plans sold under the federal health law. All of them cite high medical costs incurred by people newly enrolled under the Affordable Care Act, are consequently fueling a debate over the law’s impact that will surely become intense this summer.

Surveys taken after the Affordable Care Act’s second open enrollment period are showing that the majority of those enrolled in marketplace plans report satisfaction with their plan’s coverage and features. In fact, compared to those with older, non-ACA compliant plans, marketplace enrollees are more likely to express satisfaction with their monthly premiums and annual deductibles.


Regional Affordability Committee takes first steps

Austin’s Regional Affordability Committee is currently working to develop and adopt a set of guiding principles that will serve as the groundwork for a strategic plan. They will request a list of the public properties owned by taxing entities represented in the committee, including the City of Austin, Travis County, Austin Community College, Capital Metro, Central Health, and the Austin, Del Valle, Leander and Round Rock school districts.

Notice: The Travis County Healthcare District d/b/a Central Health adopted a tax rate that will raise more taxes for maintenance and operations than last year’s tax rate. The tax rate will effectively be raised by 6.0 percent and will raise taxes for maintenance and operations on a $100,000 home by approximately $6.18 (six dollars and eighteen cents).
