Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) Honors Central Health with Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for Fourth Consecutive Year

April 27, 2023

(Austin) — For the fourth consecutive year, Central Health has received the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, reflecting the hospital district’s commitment to the highest principles of government budgeting.

The prestigious national award is presented by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA).

“This award is a significant achievement for Central Health,” said Mike Geeslin, Central Health president and chief executive officer. “It reflects the commitment of this organization to meeting the highest principles of government budgeting, and it’s one more way our team – and our board of managers – demonstrates how transparency and accountability are part of Central Health’s DNA.”

To receive the GFOA Distinguished Budget Presentation Award, Central Health had to satisfy nationally recognized guidelines for effective budget presentation. These guidelines are designed to assess how well Central Health’s budget serves as:

  • a policy document;
  • a financial plan;
  • an operations guide; and
  • a communications device.

According to GFOA, budget documents must be rated “proficient” in all four categories, and in the 14 mandatory criteria within those categories, to receive the award. Award recipients have pioneered efforts to improve the quality of budgeting and provide an excellent example for other governments throughout North America.

“I am proud of our finance team and the continued affirmation Central Health receives from distinguished organizations that evaluate governments across North America,” said Lisa Owens, Deputy Chief Financial Officer. “We maintain extremely high standards in everything that we do. Ultimately, we are accountable to the taxpayers of Travis County, and a national award like this is another example of our commitment to being good stewards of public dollars.”

The most recent recipients, along with their corresponding budget documents, are posted quarterly on the GFOA’s website at WWW.GFOA.ORG/BUDGET-AWARD-WINNERS.
