New Orleans Hospital Is Replaced, With Hope of Preserving Its Mission

Posted: August 1st, 2015
By ABBY GOODNOUGH, The New York Times

Nearly a decade after Hurricane Katrina, the displaced staff of Charity Hospital, used to working out of tents and an abandoned Lord & Taylor, have finally made the move into a $1.1 billion replacement hospital. The new facility, named the University Medical Center New Orleans, was built largely with federal disaster funds, and is run by a private operator under contract with the state. It is already seen as proof of a much-improved health care system for the poor in the city.
