Central Health Welcomes New Board Manager

April 29, 2024

(Austin) – The Austin City Council appointed Eliza May to the Central Health Board of Managers, replacing outgoing member and chair Dr. Charles Bell.

The City Council appointed May on April 18 and she joined the board of managers for the April 24 meetings. She will complete Dr. Bell’s unexpired term, ending Dec. 31, 2025.

May is the former President & CEO of the Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce from 2000 to 2006. She also previously served as vice president for mission services and outreach with the Susan G. Komen Foundation. She currently serves on the Komen Leadership Council, where she advocates for health equity in the underinsured and uninsured communities.

“I’m honored and excited to be appointed to the board of managers. I was involved with Central Health from the very beginning, working with the citizen initiative to create a hospital district for Travis County. Through my work with the Susan G. Komen Foundation and numerous local Latino-interest

organizations, I understand the importance of the work Central Health does and how much it impacts our local Latino community. I am excited to get to work on contributing to healthcare solutions for our growing community,” May said.

May chaired the City of Austin’s minority and small business advisory board for eight years and is a founding member of the Hispanic and Business Leaders of Austin (HABLA) forum, where she also serves on the accompanying political action committee. May previously served on the City’s Hispanic/Latino Quality of Life Commission, appointed by Mayor Kirk Watson in 2023.

“I’ve had the honor of knowing Eliza for quite some time. She is a longtime local advocate of healthcare, and she will be a wonderful addition,” Board of Managers Chair Ann Kitchen said.

The Central Health Board of Managers is an all-volunteer board composed of four appointees from the Austin City Council, four appointees from the Travis County Commissioners Court, and one joint appointee. Board members are appointed to four-year terms. Full biographies of each of the nine members of the Board of Managers are found at https://centralhealth.net/about-central-health/board-of-managers.
