Central Health Served 147,186 Residents in FY 2021; A 6% Year-Over-Year Increase

April 11, 2022

Newly released annual report highlights growth in patients served and provider locations for Travis County Hospital District

(Austin) — Central Health’s newly released Fiscal Year (FY) 2021 annual report highlights the hospital district’s growth over the past year with patients and providers, and health coverage through the Medical Access Program (MAP).

Created by Travis County voters in 2004, Central Health’s mission is to improve the health of the community by caring for those who need it most — residents at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Level (FPL). Central Health serves individuals with incomes at or below $27,180, or $55,500 for a family of four.

In FY 2021, Central Health provided healthcare services for more than 147,186 individuals — one out of every nine Travis County residents. More than 97% of Central Health’s FY 2022 budget funded health care for people with low income, while maintaining the lowest tax rate of any major urban hospital district in Texas. Some of the other highlights from FY 2021 include:

  • Central Health provided access to hospital, primary, dental, specialty and other care for 47,641 uninsured Travis County residents through the Medical Access Program (MAP), and 60,661 residents received coverage through MAP Basic, a program with primary care, prescription and other essential services for low-income residents earning too much to qualify for MAP.
  • Central Health served our patients through 204 provider locations, including community health centers, hospitals, specialists, dentists, and urgent care locations.
  • Central Health funded more than half a million primary care visits through our network of providers.
  • Central Health expanded the number of provider locations by 16, including behavioral health, dental and urgent care clinics.

Central Health is also addressing generational inequities and systemic racism in the healthcare system. The Board of Managers adopted a new Healthcare Equity Plan on Feb. 23. This plan, informed by months of research, data analysis, and community input, will drive our work for years to come. With the recent creation of a Medical Executive Board and the hiring of world-class specialists, Central Health will be able to fill gaps in specialty care for the traditionally underserved populations, including communities of color in Eastern Travis County.
