Erin Espinosa: Medicaid doesn’t have to be a dirty word in Texas

In this opinion piece, Dr. Erin Espinosa, a research associate at the Texas Institute for Excellence in Mental Health, makes the case for the Youth Empowerment Services (YES) Waiver set to rollout in Texas counties by September. She looks at the new waiver as a potential solution to the alarming number of Texas teens held in juvenile detention, not because of serious offenses, but because they’re awaiting the mental health care their families couldn’t afford.

Health Insurance Companies Seek Big Rate Increases for 2016

The New York Times reports that many health insurance companies around the country are seeking rate increases of 20 percent to 40 percent, explaining that their new customers under the Affordable Care Act are sicker than expected, and therefore more costly. Federal officials are pushing to see that these requests are scaled back.

Notice: The Travis County Healthcare District d/b/a Central Health adopted a tax rate that will raise more taxes for maintenance and operations than last year’s tax rate. The tax rate will effectively be raised by 6.0 percent and will raise taxes for maintenance and operations on a $100,000 home by approximately $6.18 (six dollars and eighteen cents).
